Grad Student Forum on Faith and Suffering

Theodicy is one of the historic questions of faith. What is the nature of God's existence and presence in a world filled with real evil and real suffering? Notable theologians and philosophers have wrestled with this question; yet it is a question that tugs at the heart of any Christian engaged in ministry.

In this week's forum, we will be in conversation with one another and hear from contemporary theologians about this important question of faith. Join the conversation this Tuesday at 8:15pm in the Wesley Foundation Theater (on the 2nd floor, above Etc. Coffeehouse).

Women's Book Study Kick-Off

If you are a female student looking for a small group to join, come check out Women's Book Study! We will be meeting at Brooke's apartment Tuesday nights this semester. Our first meeting is thisTuesday night at 7:30. We'll be watching a 'chick flick' and getting to know each other. Popcorn included! We will also be talking about what book we will be reading this semester.

Starting this Tuesday, September 6 and continuing the rest of the week, there will be a September 11, 2001 memorial banner outside of Wesley. If you happen to be walking by, feel free to come and write your thoughts and prayers as we remember the events of ten years ago.

Illinois Football Pizza Party

This weekend kicked off the start of the 2011 Fighting Illini football season. This Saturday, September 10th, the team will be playing South Dakota State University at home. If you do not have a ticket to the game, but still want to cheer on your Illini, come to Wesley! We will be watching the 11am game in the student lounge. There will be free pizza!

It is wonderful meeting so many new people this week and we do hope you consider joining us for some activities. Some students just worship with us on Sundays others become involved in our Midweek Worship, Bible Studies, Service Projects and Re-creation.

Sunday Worship

Sundays at 9:30am, Traditional Service
A wonderful worship experience grounded in our historic traditions. Trumpets, organ, choir, formal liturgy and meaningful sermons help shape this service. Students actively participate in all areas of this worship service.

Enagaing music, message, guitars, drums, keyboard, and praise singers help set the stage for this wonderfully spirit filled informal service

Free Bonfire and Volleyball on the Front Lawn of Wesley

We will provide hot dogs, burgers, sides, drinks, a vegetarian option, and s'mores. It's a great time to visit with other students, learn about what's going on at Wesley and get fed. In case the weather is nasty, look for us in the Watseka Lounge. You can access Watseka from the courtyard doors on the Green St. side of the building or stay to the right after entering from the parking lot.

Midweek Student Worship 7:30pm Wed. Aug 24th

Right after our BBQ you are welcome to join us for our the first Midweek Worship of the semester. It is an informal, student-led worship that provides a spiritual lift midway through the week. Time for singing and praying, time for reflection and contemplation and time with God and friends. We start in Watseka Lounge and then move upstairs into the Great Hall.
On Aug 24th it is at 7:30pm.
The rest of the semester we will worship starting at 8:30pm.

Friday Etc. "Hot Spot" at 7:30pm in our Coffeehouse.

Looking for a place to hangout on a Friday night? Join us for fair-trade coffee and tea, snacks, live entertainment, pool, TV and fun. We're really excited about kicking off this new time in our old coffeehouse.

Everyone is welcome to come by for a few minutes or until we close at Midnight.

The Peer Ministers Are Off For The Summer!

The Wesley Peer Ministers are off for the summer, but Jarod Spohrer, Hannah Nelson and Brooke McClure will be returning in the fall, ready to give you another great school year filled with spiritual growth and fellowship. Sharon Messmore will be joining the peer ministry team in the fall and we are still looking for one or two more students to join the team. If you feel called to be a peer minister, contact Dylan by replying to this e-mail.

Summer Small Group Starting!

Are you in Champaign-Urbana this summer? Are you looking for a spiritual boost in the middle of the week? We might have just what you're looking for!

Dylan is starting an 8-week summer small group on Wednesday evenings starting June 8th at 8:00pm. The basic structure of the group session will include: opening prayer, checking in, a scriptural reading related to the nightly topic, topical discussion, prayer requests and a closing prayer or blessing. Each session will be independent from the others so if you can only make half of the sessions (or less!) do not be discouraged from coming to the sessions you CAN make it to.

Here are some of the topics that will be discussed:

· Why we get together as Christians

· Learning to Love

· Pursuing God

· Servanthood

· Gandhi's Seven Deadly Social Sins

· What the Bible Says About Justice

We will be meeting in the Great hall at 6:30, with a meal around 6:45 or 7pm. We will be having Italian food for dinner. If you plan on eating with us, please bring $5 to help cover the cost of food.

This summer, Dylan Boot, Campus Ministry Intern, and Nate Luzwick, Contemporary Worship Director and Youth Director, will be leaving their staff positions at Wesley. Dylan's internship ends with Pastor Rob's return and Nate will be going to California to join his wife who is stationed on the West Coast. Student Forum Registration Deadline Tomorrow

Student Forum this year will be held at the University of Evansville in southern Indiana from May 26th to the 29th. Student Forum is the national leadership conference of the United Methodist Student Movement, including leadership training, spiritual formation, and networking.

Registration is open to all young adult college and university students. The registration fee is $75 per person, which includes all conference materials, lodging, and meals. For more information or to register, click here.

If you have any questions or are interested in going, reply to this email or talk to Dylan. Wesley may be able to cover part of the registration fee.

The registration deadline is April 22 at midnight. Late registration will be open until the 29th with an extra $25 late fee.

Lay and clergy members of the Illinois Great Rivers Conference are contributing Lenten Devotions for an e-mail devotional guide entitled, On the Journey With Jesus. This original devotional will be available to all members and friends of Wesley Church via email, on the IGRC website and the IGRC Facebook page each morning from Ash Wednesday, March 9^th through Easter, April 24th.

Each day's devotional reading will include a scripture, a brief and original reflection and a prayer. A variety of writers, witnesses, ideas and experiences will be shared as inspiration, as we "feed" one another's spirits, day by day.

Ways to join the journey

Wesley members and friends may subscribe to the daily devotional by visiting the IGRC E-Newsletter subscription page. " You will be prompted to enter your email address. Make sure that "On the Journey with Jesus 2011 Lenten Devotional" is checked in order to receive it.

Persons who want to read the Daily Devotional online, may do so by visiting: www.igrc.org/lentendevotional beginning March 9th. The day's devotional will always be at the top. A link will also be provided on a new Facebook group, " On the Journey with Jesus Lenten Devotional" Members of the group will be automatically notified when the new devotional is posted.

Green Service Project this Saturday!

As it turns to spring, we will be doing a green service project through Faith in Place on Saturday, April 16th from 1-2:30 in the afternoon. We will be moving dirt into planters and potentially planting some plants at the Center for Women in Transition. Come get dirty! Bring gloves, shovels, and garden tools if you have them.

We will be meeting at Wesley at 1pm.

Relay for Life is this weekend

Relay for Life will be this Saturday night at 7 to 7 o'clock Sunday morning. You still have time to sign up here. Even if you don't sign up, you can still walk and hang out with us! There will be pizza at midnight. The event will be held at the outdoor track or in the Armory if the weather is bad.

If you are interested in stopping by, email the team captain, Hannah Nelson, at nelson10@illinois.edu and she can give you more information about the event and the final location.

Cunningham Children's Home needs your help!

Cunningham Children's Home is having a quilt sale next weekend and has requested our help in taking down and folding the quilts after they are done. We will be meeting at 4:30 outside the parking lot doors at Wesley to carpool over on Saturday the 9th. We will be back in time for Mexican Flavored Worship that night.

Green Service Project

Annual Conference for the Illinois Great Rivers Conference of the United Methodist Chruch will be held June 1-4 in Peoria. Students are always welcome at this conference-wide meeting, and you don't have to worry about booking a hotel if you come with us! Peer Ministers for next year

We're just past the halfway point of this semester, but it's never too early to start planning for next year!

If you want to have a key role in planning activities and service projects at Wesley, apply to be a Peer Minister! Responsibilities include weekly meetings with the campus minister and peer minister team as well as other tasks designed around your personal strengths and interests. The position is different for every peer minister.

To learn more about specific duties of being a peer minister or if you're interested in applying, email Dylan at campus_minister@wesleyui.org. You can also reply to this email to ask any of the peer ministers listed at the top of this email for more information about what they do at Wesley.

Youth Mission Trip to New Mexico

The Wesley Youth Group will be going on a mission trip this summer to New Mexico (no longer South Dakota) to work on a Navajo Indian Reservation. The trip is July 8-18. If you are interested in being a chaperone or serving alongside our youth, just reply to this email or talk to Nate Luzwick.

Youth Mission Trip to South Dakota

The Wesley Youth Group will be going on a mission trip this summer to South Dakota to work on a Lakota Indian Reservation. The trip is July 15-25. If you are interested in being a chaperone or serving alongside our youth, just reply to this email or talk to Nate Luzwick.

Ash Wednesday

The student run Ash Wednesday service will be at 6pm next Wednesday, March 9 in the Wesley sanctuary. The message of the service this year will be refocusing.

We need help setting up and decorating the sanctuary for the service. If you are available anytime between 6 and 8 Monday night or after 4pm on Tuesday, come to the sanctuary to help!

**Because of the Ash Wednesday service, there will NOT be Midweek Wednesday night. **

All Campus Worship tomorrow night!

Once a semester, the Christians of UIUC come together for All Campus Worship. This awesome worship experience will be tomorrow (Friday) night at 7pm in Foellinger Auditorium. Norm Hubbard will be the speaker. Bring your friends!

Student Council Meeting on Monday

The student council meeting has officially been scheduled for Monday night at 8 in the Etc Coffeehouse. We will be discussing what qualities we want in our future Director. Also, we will be going over the last of the finances from the Thailand mission trip, and Pastor Howard will be relaying feedback from the campus coach's visit last semester.

Next week's Midweek is about service, so to act on this topic we will be volunteering at the Wesley Evening Food Pantry.

Be sure to sign up at http://wesleypantry.org/volunteer-sign-up/ if you plan on helping out on Thursday. You can sign up for any block of time from 4:30 to 7:30. We will be doing training at Midweek, so you don't have to worry about coming early for training.

24 Hour Prayer Room

We will be having a 24 hour prayer room from 7pm this Friday, February 11 to 7pm Saturday, February 12. This is an excellent opportunity to set aside an hour of your day to spend some time alone with God in prayer. There will be various musical selections, art supplies and other activities, because there is more than one way to pray.

Wesley's Winter Potluck this Sunday!

Come in from the cold and join us in fellowship and good, free food! The church is having a potluck lunch this Sunday after the 11:15 service around 12:30 in the Great Hall. Students are guests, so you don't need to bring anything.

As a bonus, Pastor Howard will serenade this wonderful event with some romantic love songs accompanied by Pastor Dan. This is one event you don't want to miss!!!

Valentine Chocolate Party tomorrow

Etc Coffeehouse is having a Valentine chocolate making party tomorrow night to start off Valentine's Day weekend. You can come any time between 5:30 and 9pm to make and decorate chocolate candies to give to friends, classmates or eat yourself!

Super Bowl Chili Cook-Off!

As our tradition, we will again be having our annual Chili Cook-Off and Super Bowl party this Sunday, February 6th.

Bring your best batch of chili because we will be voting for the top three chilis to win the chili champion apron as well as gift cards to Chili's restaurant.

We will also be showing Super Bowl XLV between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Green Bay Packers on the big screen.

Kickoff is at 5:29 central time, but if you're bringing chili, please be in Watseka Lounge by 5pm.

This is the perfect opportunity to get your friends together for free food and to watch one of the most anticipated sporting events of the year!

Student Council Meeting

Do you want to know what activities are coming up? Are you interested in planning what goes on at Wesley?

We will be having our first student council meeting of the semester next week. The tentative meeting date and time will be Monday at 7pm in Etc. If this changes, another email will be sent out. Anyone is welcome to come to this meeting.

Student Forum, May 26-29

Registration is open to all young adult college and university students. The registration fee to attend is $75 per person, which includes all conference materials, lodging, and meals.

Mission trip opportunities to Haiti

Rev. Matt Henson of Living the Adventure Ministries has made several trips to Haiti.

"On my most recent trip to Haiti, we went up to an overlook area above Port au Prince. The bird's eye view was very moving, as our group could see the destruction and need for many workers," Henson said. "We found ourselves pointing to tent cities, homes without roofs, and homes that were in great need of repair. The overlook gave me an opportunity to see Port au Prince in a way I had not seen it in my previous trip. It is my desire in the next year to take four groups to Haiti to experience the culture, the people and to assist the church in repairing and giving a sense of hope."

Living the Adventure Ministries, in collaboration with the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, has scheduled four trips in 2011:

Feb. 22-March 2 (1 spot available)
May 24-31 (Trip for Young Adults - 18-35 years old)
July 18-25 (Trip for Graduating High School Seniors and Freshman in College)
Oct. 18-26 (Adult Trip)
