Summer Midweek Schedule We will be having an informal gathering of students every other Wednesday for Midweek at Dylan's apartment. It will be a mix of Study, Worship and Food. June 9th we will be looking over potential resources for the rest of the summer. You are welcome to bring a snack to share. The yellow bus drops off real close to his apartment or let campus_minister@wesleyui.org know and we can arrange a ride to share. We will meet at 8:30 pm unless stated otherwise. 301 W. Aug 18 Summer Field Trips   We have a number of wonderful field trips planned through the course of the summer. All students are welcome to join in. We try to keep them cheap or free but they are always fun. June 26th- Tour Urbana:  East of Campus during the afternoon Urbana is also called by some as "old town" and it looks it as it has not had as much development as Champaign has been doing over the many years, this however is nice to see as there is building here that have been standing the test of time and have a comfortable small town feel that put's your mind at ease. The style of stores and restaurants also is unique from those of the mall in Champaign and cater to a more specific demographic. Jarod will show you artwork painted on sides of buildings, and many of the stores ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- July 10th- Amish Trip: Leaving at ~10:00 Saturday, 45min drive The various Amish (pronounced AH-mish) are known for simple living, plain dress, and practice ways of doing everything by hand without the aid of modern technology. We will drive to Rock home gardens and be guided around their community and see how things are done in old style ways, and enjoy home cooked food that has been made with care and to perfection. See country side and breath fresh air and maybe take something away from the experience that will open your eyes to see how people can have a fulfilling life without all the modern technology and be happy -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Jul 16th- Horseback Riding: This trip is designed for the adventures! We will be traveling to Le Roy county, only 45 minutes away! Last year our group went and had a great time riding horses along deep forest paths and across prairie land. They have very well trained horses, so if you are afraid as a first timer, you need not worry. They will teach you all you will need to know to enjoy your self!  Afterword there is a lake that great to skip rocks across the water, and nature trails and scenery to take pictures! (personally one of my favorite trips of the summer) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------  Jul 31st- Tour Champaign: West of Campus, One of the most educational trips you may take with us as you will have a chance to see useful shops and food places to take friends you meet while you are here. There is a lot beautiful architecture Downtown and comfortable Cafe's with unique snacks and treats, a place called ten thousand Villages that sells items from around the world (great for gifts, or decoration for your home), A chocolate Shop that serves to your sweet side that also has many gift worthy items and a smell in the atmosphere that will make you want to stay forever! We will stop for a quick lunch and talk about things you have seen around the town ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aug 6th- Tour Japan House/Arboretum: On Campus, Lincoln ave. and Florida ave. (10 min. bus/car ride) With moving into the Summer we will get more and more flowers blooming and the arboretum is Definitely the place to go as you see so many colors everywhere, Shade under full leafed trees of many variety and Last but not least the Beautiful Japan House. Made many years ago in recognition of Japanese Culture, they do Tea Ceremonies and open houses to show people what a traditional Japan house looks like and the gardens and sculptures are always accessible and very pretty to look at and take pictures, including a peace fountain, the whole experience is very "Zen" and something you don't want to miss. Spring Senior Banquet Graduation season means its time for us to celebrate our graduating and departing students. Since we are a Methodist-affiliated ministry, food will be involved. We will be having our annual spring banquet this Sunday, May 2 from 6-8:30pm in the Etc. Coffeehouse at Wesley. Menu for the evening: - Papa Del's Original Sicilian Pan Pizzas - Breadsticks with dipping sauces - Soda - Chocolate fondue served with fruit and sweets Come with touching, interesting, or embarrassing stories about any of our graduates (touching stories optional). Illinois Marathon - May 1st The runners in the Illinois Marathon will be passing by the Wesley Foundation twice in their 26.2 mile journey, around miles 2 and 12. We will be providing some entertainment and a lot of encouragement for the runners. Want to help? We will start setting up at 7:30am, and the first runners should be coming around 7:45. There will be donuts on a first come, first serve basis for those to come bright and early. We will also be handing out cups of jelly beans to the runners the second time they go past. We will be out until about 11am. Come by for an hour or two and don't forget your enthusiasm! PFLAG Meeting May 25 at 7pm C-U PFLAG (Champaign-Urbana Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) will be hosting a very special meeting Tuesday, May 25 at 7pm at Wesley. Kevin Johnson will share from his personal and professional experiences of growing up gay in Champaign Urbana including his work in creating the UP Uniting Pride Community Center. Interfaith Youth Service Days April 24th and 25th This event will be held in the old Hobby Lobby building at 1916 Glenn Park Drive in Champaign on Saturday, April 24 from 8am to 6pm and Sunday, April 25 from 1pm to 6pm. Two types of volunteers are needed for this event: Meal Packagers and Red Shirts. Details of both of these positions, as well as a link to registration are at http://www.daysofservice.org/. Pepsi Refresh Project Pepsi is looking for people, businesses, and non-profits with ideas that will have a positive impact. They are giving away $5k, $25k, and $50k awarding grants to the top 10 voted projects and $250k to the top two voted projects in their respected categories. 3E Love LLC. is an entrepreneurial experiment with the goal to advance the social acceptance of disability. Their trademarked International Symbol of Acceptance (the wheelchair heart) is a message of love and support, not pity. 3E Love is in the running for $250,000, but they need your help! Senior Banquet Save the date! This year's senior banquet will be held the afternoon of Sunday, May 2nd at Wesley. No Midweek Worship this Week - Instead Training for Food Pantry Volunteers During our usual 8:30pm Wed Time Slot we will be doing a 45 minute training for persons who want to help with the food Pantry. Training should last 45 minutes. Each month our Wesley Foundation serves over 1000 persons in need a week's worth of groceries. This is a huge undertaking as we convert our foundation into a food pantry (grocery store) each third Thursday of the month. We need to unload a semi's worth of food, set up tables open boxes and direct traffic. At the end of the evening we need to tear it all down and clean up. You do not need to speak English to help as much of it is "manual labor." This is a great way to see another side of America. Food Pantry volunteers are needed for many jobs throughout the month, but especially the days and hours leading up to, and through, distribution on the evening of the 3rd Thursday of the month. Training for persons who have not yet be trained will be Wed at 7:00pm and on March 17th also at 8:30pm. Training lasts a little over an hour and is required for all persons volunteering for all Thursday shifts (except clean up). You do not need to be trained to help at other set up or cleanup times. Some of the times you can volunteer include (you do not need to work the full time slot): Wed. Mar 17th 12:30-2:00 pm Truck Unloading, 18 persons each hour Wed. Mar 17th 6:30 - 8:30 pm Food Setup Wed. Mar 17th 7:00 pm Training for volunteering on Thursdays Wed. Mar 17th 8:30 pm Training for volunteering on Thursdays Thurs. Mar 18th 2:00 - 4:30 pm Final Set-Up (Training Required) Thurs. Mar 18th 3:00 - 5:30 pm Registration and Number Handout (Training Required) Thurs. Mar 18th 4:30 - 7:30 pm Food Distribution (Training Required) Thurs. Mar 18th 8:30 - 10:00 pm Cleanup 18 persons each hour PLEASE sign up ahead of time online so we know who will be helping or going through training. http://wesleypantry.org/volunteering/ Car and Driver Needed for Spring Break Mission Trip If you have a car and haven't nailed down your spring break plans, we could use you. We have a group of 14 students going to Lake Charles Louisiana to help do small home repairs. This area of Louisiana struggles with chronic poverty and then was hit very hard by hurricane Rita. We will leave early on March 20th and return late on March 27th. The cost of the trip is only $250 but expect to work while we are down there. We will also have one tour day in New Orleans.
